Renowned sports journalist and esteemed figure in sports broadcasting, Ambassador Amar Ignis, achieved another milestone by receiving the “Ace Commentator” Meritorious Award from the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN FCT) Chapter on November 30, 2023, in Abuja.
The award was a tribute to Ignis for his significant contributions to the development and growth of sports in Nigeria. The presentation took place during the Annual SWAN FCT 2023 Week and Awards ceremony at the Area 3 FIFA goal project football pitch in Garki, Abuja.
In a brief interview following the award presentation, the distinguished sports veteran expressed his surprise, stating, “This award has come as a surprise to me. I attended this event like any other SWAN member to host it, but unexpectedly, I was honored with this meritorious award.”
Acknowledging the importance of recognition from one’s own association, Ignis emphasized, “When your own Association acknowledges your ability, it signifies that you are truly proficient at what you do. I am sincerely appreciative of this significant award and want to thank the Ndubueze Chidoka-led FCT SWAN for deeming me worthy of this honor.”
Before this accolade, the Imo-born sports journalism legend had recently received the ‘NUJ BEST SPORTS PRESENTER’ award, adding to his already impressive list of achievements. Amar Ignis, who served as the Head of station at Brila 88.9 FM for several years, has been recognized as one of the country’s top commentators.
His expertise extends to hosting major sporting events as the master of ceremonies, including the National Sports Festival, the National Youth Games, as well as football commentary during the African Nations Cup and World Cup qualifiers involving the Super Eagles of Nigeria on Radio Nigeria’s network service, where he currently works.
Presently holding the position of Head of Media & Communications at the Nigeria National League (NNL), Ignis has also made a mark as a skilled veteran actor in the Nigerian movie industry, Nollywood.
