As part of the efforts to host the best-ever Nigeria University Games (NUGA), the University of Jos (UniJos), yesterday (23/01/24), handed over two major infrastructural projects to the contractors.
Professor Ishaya Tanko, the Vice Chancellor, of the University of Jos, at the J.T. Useni Stadium, assured all that the Institution was ready to provide world-class facilities that will not only be used for the games but will host other sporting events both locally and nationally.
“We are here to officially hand over infrastructural facilities designed to host the 2024 NUGA Games, demonstrating our readiness to host and win,” stated the Vice Chancellor.
The newly handed-over facilities, including the Indoor Sports Hall, Pavilion, football pitch, and tartan tracks, are considered fundamental and pivotal projects.
Professor Tanko highlighted the collaborative efforts with the State Government, underscoring the significance of their involvement in hosting such a prestigious event.
He stated, “Bringing NUGA to the University means bringing NUGA to the state, and we are collaborating with the State to ensure the utilization of other facilities owned by the government.”
In pursuit of the hosting and winning tradition, Prof Tanko affirmed the norm worldwide, expressing optimism about the university’s talented athletes gearing up for the games. He assured that the athletes are diligently preparing to be in top shape.
On his part, the Acting NUGA President, Prof Muhammad Bala, commended the university for its unprecedented collaboration with TETFUND and the State Government. Anticipating one of the best NUGA events, he noted that the proposed facilities would allow for the complete hosting of the games within the university, producing players and athletes to represent the country.
Dr. Prof Ishaya Pam, Chairman of the Sports Committee, echoed the significance of the project handover to contractors, marking the initial step in the preparations for NUGA 2024.
Emphasizing the involvement of the State Government as a major stakeholder, he said, “We plan to collaborate with the state government as their involvement is crucial in numerous areas. This includes security, transportation, and accommodation, as we anticipate hosting no fewer than 9000 individuals, a significant number that necessitates comprehensive support.”
University of Jos is expected to host the 2024 NUGA between November and December this year and both contractors awarded the jobs have assured the management of the Institution that both projects would be concluded between 36 and 48 weeks.
