The 2024 National Youth Games in Asaba came to an exciting close on Thursday, September 19th, with Plateau State securing a commendable 15th place overall, winning a total of 15 medals—4 gold, 3 silver, and 8 bronze.
The standout performances came from the Taekwondo and Athletics teams. Yeipyeng Chollom stole the show in Taekwondo, clinching two gold medals—one in the individual category and another in the mixed team event alongside Iverson Eric, who himself earned a silver medal in his individual event. These victories were a testament to their dedication and skill, adding a significant boost to the state’s medal tally.
In Athletics, Gyang S. Davou took home a gold medal, while Nerat Sambo contributed with a silver, showing the team’s resilience and grit on the track.
Plateau State also saw success in Chess, with Adima R. Bernice taking the top spot in her category, winning a gold medal. Her teammate, Nathaniel Danjuma, added a silver, while Adarju Ijai rounded out the Chess team’s success with a bronze.
Racheal Davou gave a determined performance in Cycling, earning a bronze medal, while Veirat Dachollom brought home another bronze for the state in Weightlifting. Gymnast Francis Michael added a bronze to the state’s count in Gymnastics, showcasing his talent on the national stage.
The Wrestling team also showed their mettle, with Faith Bala and Franklin Philips both securing bronze medals in their respective weight categories, further contributing to the state’s success.
Additionally, the Badminton pair of Ella Ishaya and Daniel Musa earned a bronze in their event, adding to Plateau State’s diverse range of sports in which they excelled.
The athletes’ hard work, resilience, and determination were evident in every performance, and Plateau State’s 15th-place finish is a reflection of their growing presence in the national sports scene. With a young and talented group of athletes, the state is poised for even greater achievements in future competitions.
