2024 Governor’s Cup: Jos North Triumphs as Plateau State Government Plans to Elevate Sports from mere Entertainment

In an exhilarating conclusion to this year’s sports competition, Hon. Noel Nkup, Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, commended the Jos North team for clinching victory.

 

He emphasized Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s commitment to transforming sports from mere entertainment into a strategic investment for youth engagement and societal development.

 

Hon. Nkup stated, “The time is ripe for sports to be seen as an avenue for investment, employment, and talent development. Our administration is resolute in upgrading sports infrastructure across Plateau State to restore its status as a hub for sporting excellence.” He also highlighted ongoing efforts to revitalize Plateau United’s performance in the NPFL, ensuring the team’s escape from relegation.

In the third-place match, Mikang defeated Jos South 1-0 with a stunning free-kick by Merpring Chigdi in the 52nd minute. The final saw Jos North, silver medalists last year, claim gold by defeating Shendam LG 1-0, thanks to Francis Izang’s decisive corner kick.

 

The tournament celebrated exceptional talents, with awards going to Obed Luka (Highest Goal Scorer), Nasiru Muazu (Best Goalkeeper), Longwap Darko (Most Valuable Player), and Coach Sani Muhammad (Best Coach).

 

This event marked another step in Plateau State’s mission to uplift its youths and harness the power of sports for sustainable development.
