In a significant boost to grassroots football development in Plateau State, Senator Pam Dachung Mwadkwon officially kicked off the maiden edition of the Berom Nation’s Cup on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at the Bukuru Mini Stadium in Jos South Local Government Area.
The tournament, a landmark initiative for football development in Berom Land, aims to foster unity among youths while honing their skills in the sport.
During the opening ceremony, Senator Mwadkwon pledged a generous donation of one million naira to support the organizers, recognizing their efforts in promoting youth engagement through sports. Addressing the young athletes, he urged them to embrace fair play, discipline, and teamwork, emphasizing that the competition presents a platform not only for showcasing talent but also for forging lifelong relationships that transcend ethnic and regional boundaries.

“As we gather here today, I encourage every participant to see this as more than just a competition. Let it be a vehicle for fostering unity, discipline, and excellence. I look forward to seeing players from this tournament rise to national and international prominence,” he stated.
Geoffrey Bottson, President of the Berom Sports Development Association (BESDA) and Chairman of the Berom Nation’s Cup, took the opportunity to unveil the broader vision behind the initiative. According to Bottson, the tournament is not just a one-time event but the foundation of a sustainable football development program that spans all 14 districts of Berom Land.

“This initiative aims to discover and nurture grassroots football talent, creating pathways for young players to advance into professional football. We believe that through proper scouting, training, and exposure, the Berom Nation’s Cup can become a launchpad for future stars in both local and international leagues,” Bottson stated.
The tournament, which commenced on March 1, 2025, will run until April 19, 2025, featuring 14 teams representing the 14 districts of Berom Land: Foron, Gashish, Heipang, Riyom, Fan, Bachi, Aboro, Du, Kuru, Gyel, Vwang, Za’ang, Jos, and Ropp. This initiative by BESDA is expected to not only elevate football standards in the region but also serve as a catalyst for youth development and community cohesion.
Meanwhile, Senator Mwadkwon is currently on a ‘Thank You Tour’ across his senatorial zone, engaging with constituents and reaffirming his commitment to developmental projects. His presence at the Berom Nation’s Cup underscores his dedication to youth empowerment through sports.
