The University of Jos (UNIJOS) is set to make sporting history as it prepares to host the Federation of International University Sports (FISU) Trials from April 6th to 12th, 2025 — a key qualifying event for the upcoming World University Games in the Rhine-Ruhr Region of Germany.
As anticipation builds, UNIJOS has received a significant vote of confidence from top officials of the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA), led by its President, Engr. Professor Bawa Mohammed. The delegation visited the University to assess preparations for the trials and were met with assurances of full readiness from the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tanko Ishaya.
During the meeting, Professor Ishaya emphasized the University’s unwavering commitment to delivering a smooth and impactful event. “Our Sports Committee is working tirelessly, holding regular consultations and meetings to ensure no detail is overlooked,” he said, adding that UNIJOS is collaborating closely with stakeholders, including the Plateau State Government, the Lutheran Church, and Rayfield Tennis Club, to secure additional facilities and resources.
NUGA President, Professor Bawa Mohammed, stressed the significance of the Trials, describing them as a foundational step for the upcoming NUGA Games and an opportunity to showcase the best of university sports in Nigeria. “This visit is to ensure that the necessary logistics and facilities are in place, and I must say, the level of commitment here is commendable,” he stated.
Chairman of the UniJos Sports Committee, Professor Ishaya Pam, provided further updates, assuring that major renovations on sports facilities are nearing completion and that accommodations for over 500 student-athletes and officials from 54 participating universities have been carefully planned. He noted that the support from the Plateau State Sports Council, including the provision of additional officials, will further bolster the University’s capacity to host a seamless event.
The inspection tour of the University’s sports facilities allowed NUGA officials to interact directly with key partners, including the Director of the Plateau State Sports Council, Professor Ezra Gunen, and offer strategic recommendations for final adjustments.
With athletics, swimming, badminton, tennis, table tennis, judo, and taekwondo set to take center stage, the University of Jos is not only preparing for a week of competition — it’s preparing to inspire a new era of excellence in Nigerian university sports.
