In a solemn and deeply emotional statement, Senator Dr Joshua Chibi Dariye, former Governor of Plateau State, has expressed profound grief over the death of the immediate past Deputy Governor of Plateau State, Professor Sonni Gwanle Tyoden, who passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2025, after a brief illness.
Senator Dariye described the passing of Professor Tyoden as a monumental loss not only to the Mwaghavul Nation and Plateau State but also to the Nigerian academic and political landscapes. He highlighted the deceased’s enduring legacy in academia, politics, and public service, lauding his contributions as a scholar, statesman, and mentor to generations of leaders.
Recalling Professor Tyoden’s transformative leadership as Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Senator Dariye noted his role in elevating the institution to one of the most respected universities in Nigeria. “Professor Sonni Tyoden made tremendous impact in the advancement of the university system and will remain a reference point for generations,” Dariye stated.
The Senator described the late Professor as a kind-hearted, humble, and courageous man whose expertise extended well beyond academia. As Deputy Governor under the Lalong administration, Professor Tyoden served as a stabilizing figure, bringing intellect and experience to governance.

Offering his heartfelt condolences to the Mishkaham Mwaghavul, the entire Mwaghavul Nation, and the bereaved family, Senator Dariye prayed for the repose of Professor Tyoden’s soul and urged the family to find strength in God’s will. He particularly extended sympathy to the widow, Mrs Abigail Tyoden, and their four children, emphasizing the professor’s irreplaceable role in both public and private life.
“His legacy will endure, and though his exit has created a void, his contributions will continue to inspire,” Senator Dariye concluded.
