Team Plateau delivered a dramatic five-set comeback to defeat Team Bayelsa 3–2 (20–25, 25–23, 22–25, 25–22, 17–15) in a pulsating men’s volleyball clash at the Gateway Games 2024. The victory books Plateau’s place in the quarterfinals and keeps their gold medal ambitions firmly alive.
Bayelsa came out strong, taking the first and third sets with powerful serves and relentless attacks. However, Plateau’s response was equally fierce. With national team-caliber players showing resilience and poise, they clawed back to win the second and fourth sets before edging the decider 17–15 in front of an electric crowd. Arinze’s energy, Oguche’s leadership, Izuchukwu’s power, and Sylvanus’ calm defense were all instrumental in the result.

Speaking after the match, Head Coach Lydia Ashoms attributed the victory to her team’s mental strength and international pedigree. “I think stability was our weapon,” Ashoms said. “Most of my players are strong players—as in international players—so they were able to handle the emotions and the tension of the game. At one point, it was looking like we were losing, but we were still stable. Things weren’t going our way, but we got ourselves back. A much better game.”
Ashoms emphasized that the team’s focus remains on clinching the gold medal. “The gold, of course, yes—that’s our target. So we are moving to the quarter-finals, which we are expecting should be a 3–0,” she stated confidently.

She also acknowledged the strength of the Bayelsa team but noted their lack of experience. “They are a strong side, but that lack of experience showed in key moments.”
With confidence high and their stars performing under pressure, Team Plateau continue their campaign with momentum—and their eyes firmly set on the top prize.
