The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has announced that two veteran journalists, Mr. Jack Moses Ekwe-Ekwe(JP) and Mr. Nehemiah Gagara, will receive National Recognition Awards as part of activities marking the Association’s Diamond Jubilee Celebration (SWAN @60).
According to official letters signed by the SWAN Secretary-General, Ikenna Okonkwo, both journalists are being honoured with the “SWAN @60 Veteran Sports Journalist Award” for their outstanding contributions, professionalism, and enduring service to the growth and integrity of sports journalism in Nigeria.
SWAN described the duo as “valued pioneers and pillars of the profession” whose sacrifices, mentorship, and legacies have promoted excellence, fairness, and credibility in sports reporting across the country.
“This honour is in recognition of your outstanding contributions, professionalism, and enduring service to the growth and integrity of sports journalism in Nigeria. Over the years, your commitment, mentorship, and passion for the craft have inspired generations of journalists and enriched the nation’s sporting narrative,” the statement read in part.
Both Mr. Moses and Mr. Gagara, who are former National Officers of SWAN and highly respected figures in the Plateau sports media community, have over the years played pivotal roles in mentoring young journalists and advocating for high professional standards in the field.
The highlight of the celebration will be the SWAN @60 Award and Appeal Fund Ceremony, scheduled to hold on October 31, 2025, at the VIP Lounge, Package A, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja. The event, which is part of a three-day Diamond Jubilee celebration (October 29–31), will bring together top sports journalists, administrators, and stakeholders to celebrate six decades of promoting sports journalism and national unity through the pen.
The Plateau State Chapter of SWAN has congratulated both Mr. Moses and Mr. Gagara on their national recognition, describing it as a well-deserved honour for two distinguished professionals whose dedication continues to inspire younger journalists across the country.
“Their recognition at the national level is a testament to their immense contributions to sports journalism and their unwavering commitment to the values of truth, fairness, and professionalism,” the Plateau SWAN leadership stated.
As SWAN marks 60 years of excellence, the recognition of Mr. Jack Moses Ekwe-Ekwe(JP) and Mr. Nehemiah Gagara stands as a proud reminder of the Association’s rich legacy and the trailblazers who have shaped its history.
