Plateau United treated fans at the Zaria Road Stadium, Jos, to an evening of high-quality football as they secured a dramatic 1–0 victory over Kwara United in their NPFL Match Day 25 encounter.
Despite dominating large spells of the game, goals proved elusive for most of the contest. Plateau United dictated the tempo in the first half, creating several openings, but both sides went into the break locked at 0–0.
The second half followed a similar pattern — intensity, discipline, and a tactical chess match — with neither side able to find the breakthrough until the dying moments.
That moment arrived in the 89th minute.
Former Kwara United forward Sadiq Yusuf rose highest to decide the contest, calmly finishing a well-worked move that began with Harrison’s free kick and was perfectly laid on by Wisdom. The late strike sparked wild celebrations among the home supporters and sealed a crucial three points for the Tin City side.
Though not fully fit, Sadiq delivered when it mattered most. While his overall performance was understandably measured, his decisive contribution highlighted his experience and importance — especially against his former club.
The victory lifts Plateau United to 12th place on the NPFL standings and further underlines their remarkable turnaround in form.
Ogunbote: “It’s About Mentality, Belief, and Calmness”
Speaking after the match, head coach Gbenga Ogunbote attributed the team’s resurgence to a shift in mindset.
“It’s about changing the mentality of the players and making them believe we have a name to protect. When anxiety comes in, football becomes difficult. We needed calmness, belief, and patience.
I knew the goal would come because we flooded the box with attackers. Thank God it came at last.”
Ogunbote also explained the decision to carefully manage Sadiq Yusuf’s minutes, citing his fitness level, age, and the need to preserve him with crucial fixtures still ahead.
